An exhibition by Ben Kruisdijk and Conny Kuilboer, featuring individual works and work made in collaboration.

The exhibition will be opened by Josien Beltman, Coordinator documentation / librarian at Rijksmuseum Twenthe.

The opening will also host a New Years Drink Party.

The Shock of the New

Ben Kruisdijk en Conny Kuilboer zijn kunstenaars in een Postmoderne tijd, voor hen is er geen sprake meer van duidelijke opeenvolging van stromingen, zoals in het Modernisme.
Het lineaire vooruitgangsbegrip, dat aan het Modernisme ten grondslag lag, heeft hier plaats gemaakt voor een gelijktijdigheid en zelfs bonte mengeling van stromingen en stijlen zonder duidelijk toekomstperspectief.

Mede hierdoor voelen zij zich vrij om te refereren naar stromingen van voorheen en daar vragen bij te stellen en kanttekeningen bij te plaatsen.

In de tentoonstelling 'The Death of Modernism' gaan Kruisdijk / Kuilboer in op het idee van het Avantgarde en 'The Shock of the New' binnenin beeldende kunst.
Dit doen zij met een licht humoristische beeldtaal die ook ironisch en melancholisch opgevat kan worden.

Beeldend kunstenaar Ben Kruisdijk (1981) is in eerste instantie een tekenaar, maar niet een tekenaar in de traditionele zin des woord, zijn eigen handschrift is namelijk ondergeschikt aan de visuele talen die hij bijeen brengt in zijn werk.
Hij citeert regelmatig anatomische afbeeldingen uit oude boeken, stripverhalen, flora en fauna afbeeldingen en reproducties van modernistische werken van de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw.
Naast de meerdere technieken die hij hiervoor hanteert weet hij ook een divers scala aan media te benutten als drager voor zijn werken. Één van de meest uitgesproken voorbeelden hiervan is zijn gebruik van röntgen foto's om afbeeldingen in te krassen.
Kruisdijk zegt hierover: "omdat ik röntgenfoto's esthetisch gezien erg interessant vond en wist dat ze een aparte visuele taal vormden, die uitsluitend in de medische wereld als iets alledaags werd ervaren, besloot ik om ze toe te eigenen en in de kunstwereld te plaatsen, waar men met andere uitgangspunten naar ze kijkt."
Mede hierdoor lijken zijn werken gegrond in de wetenschap. echter door een sterke melancholische ondertoon weet hij het wetenschappelijke karakter van zijn beelden te overstijgen. Daarnaast wil hij graag dat de toeschouwer hun eigen referentiekader op zijn werk kunnen los laten.

Ben Kruisdijk studeerde in 2005 af aan AKI / ArtEz in Enschede.
Tevens was hij in 2009 en 2010 als docent verbonden aan AKI / ArtEz.

as a returning event in the gallery, the show during the summer months will exhibit the work of the artists selected for the yearly international call.
the participation in this 11th edition has been quite high with a total of 620 portfolios sent by artists from all over the globe, the majority being from the americas and europe.
for the final selection we have centered on the criteria’s of internationalism, quality, professionalism and not least originality, which have nothing to do with nationalities, genders or styles.
since the beginning, the call was born with the firm commitment to promote and to support the artistic creation, and to promote all those new media of which our contemporaneousness consists.

through this contest, what interests us, is to get in touch with the youngest sector on the international art scene, and to give them the opportunity to develop their work in a professional environment. At the same time it is an opportunity for the gallery to get to know by firsthand what is developing in most contemporary art.
And last, this collaboration creates a line of work with new artists that might end up forming part of the artists of the gallery.
